Oramai la via per Ctesifonte era aperta: tutto sembrava andare per il meglio ma Il problema era che i Romani controllavano, si, la terra tra l'Eufrate e il Tigri, ma Ctesifonte si trova sul lato orientale del Tigri che andava attraversato. l'esercito di Giuliano aveva però un ultimo asso nella manica per impressionare i persiani. Giuliano sapeva infatti che nella regione era stato costruito da Traiano e poi abbandonato un canale che collegava l'Eufrate al Tigri: i due fiumi erano piuttosto vicini nella regione di Ctesifonte. Gli ingegneri romani rimossero le pietre che i Persiani avevano posizionato per ostruire il canale ed evitare proprio quello che i romani stavano per fare: il canale fu riaperto e allagato. l'immensa flotta fluviale romana vi entrò trionfalmente e poté navigare fino al Tigri e sbucare nei pressi di Ctesifonte. Giuliano era riuscito nel suo intento: aveva portato un'immensa armata e flotta romana alle soglie della capitale persiana.

I Persiani non erano però imbelli: a Ctesifonte c'era una forte guarnigione e parte dell'esercito di Shapur. I persiani tenevano la sponda orientale del grande fiume, Giuliano avrebbe dovuto forzare il passaggio se avesse voluto porre sotto assedio la capitale. L'imperatore pensò ad un piano ambizioso: fece caricare su alcune delle navi 800 soldati e diede ordine che attraversassero il fiume di notte, per occupare una testa di ponte. All'inizio i soldati erano timorosi dell'ordine del sovrano, ma quando videro alcuni commilitoni già in atto di sbarcare e a rischio di essere sopraffatti i soldati prescelti si gettarono attraverso il fiume. Una volta assicuratasi una posizione, fu dato l'ordine di passare all'intero esercito. Sull'altra sponda c'erano però migliaia di arcieri e fanti persiani, oltre ai cavalieri catafratti, ricoperti d'acciai dalla testa ai piedi, e a un buon numero di elefanti. Ne seguì uno scontro acceso tra i due eserciti, mentre Giuliano faceva la spola verso i settori dove i romani erano in maggiore difficoltà, apparentemente incurante della sua sicurezza personale: era diventato un comandante rispettato e amato dai suoi soldati che venivano rinfrancati ogni volta che lo vedevano. Alla fine i Romani spinsero i persiani alla fuga e verso la sicurezza delle mura della loro capitale. Nella fuga circa 2500 di loro furono uccisi, mentre i Romani persero solo settanta uomini.

Fino a questo punto la marcia di Giuliano era stata una progressione trionfale, ma qui finalmente dobbiamo fare conti con l'impulsività di Giuliano oltre che il suo innegabile coraggio e la sua finora impeccabile guida militare. Giuliano era entrato nella Persia senza un obiettivo strategico chiaro: se l'obiettivo era conquistare l'impero persiano fino ad ora si era solo scherzato: Giuliano aveva saccheggiato città e terre dei Persiani, ma l'impero aveva molte altre terre. Se l'obiettivo era giungere ad una pace vantaggiosa peri Romani Giuliano aveva avuto l'occasione di raggiungerla prima ancora di partire, con Shapur che aveva implorato la pace. Sembra che l'obiettivo di Giuliano fosse invece di arrivare a Ctesifonte, saccheggiarla o costringere Shapur ad una battaglia campale per difenderla, possibilmente con l'aiuto dell'armata di Procopio. Il problema era che non c'era traccia né dell'armata principale di Shapur né di quella inviata da Giuliano come diversione: di fronte ai Romani si estendeva ora la capitale, un tempo regolarmente saccheggiata da generali romani trionfanti ma che ora sembrava impregnabile. Quello che dovete sapere è che nel tardo impero ci fu una rivoluzione delle tecniche di difesa delle città, con fortificazioni e macchine da assedio impensabili anche solo cento anni prima. Queste innovazioni si erano diffuse in entrambi i grandi imperi ora in lotta e quella che era stata una città facilmente prendibile era diventata una micidiale fortezza. Certo, sarebbe stato possibile prenderla, ma non senza lunghe settimane se non mesi di assedio, tempo che Shapur avrebbe potuto utilizzare per mobilizzare un'enorme armata dall'interno dei suoi sterminati domini. Un'armata in grado di schiacciare i romani tra l'incudine dell'esercito e il martello delle mura e della guarnigione di Ctesifonte. La situazione era difficile: i romani si ritrovavano in campo aperto, a centinaia di miglia dalle loro basi, in territorio ostile e potenzialmente stretti tra due minacce. Giuliano non aveva mai perso una battaglia, ma rischiava di perdere la guerra.

Giuliano e il suo entourage militare si riunirono in consiglio per decidere il da farsi. Le opzioni erano due: tornare per dove erano venuti, attraverso territori devastati dagli stessi romani e che quindi non avrebbero potuto sfamare l'esercito, o risalire il Tigri con la speranza di ricongiungersi con l'armata di Procopio. Giuliano scelse, criticamente, una terza via: contro il parere degli alti papaveri dell'esercito decise di marciare verso l'interno dell'Iran, abbandonando le familiari sponde dei fiumi: l'intenzione era di causare tale e tanta devastazione da costringere Shapur ad una battaglia campale che Giuliano era fiducioso di poter vincere.

C'era un problema però: la grande flotta d'invasione. Giuliano non poteva portarla con sé verso l'interno dell'Iran e non poteva lasciarla nelle mani dei Persiani. Prese quindi una decisione gravida di conseguenze e diede ordine di bruciare l'intera flotta: i soldati videro ominosamente le fiamme circondare e distruggere le navi che li aveva accompagnati, protetti e sfamati per mesi e la cosa non gli piacque neanche un po': quelle erano le navi da cui dipendeva la loro vita e rumoreggiarono a lungo. Ma Giuliano impose ancora il suo volere: fece anche sbarcare i circa 20 mila marinai della flotta che furono uniti all'esercito, portandone il numero verso circa 60 mila uomini. Un esercito capace di sconfiggere anche da solo, senza Procopio e la sua armata, l'esercito principale di Shapur.

In questo difficile frangente, il 16 Giugno del 363, finalmente comparvero in lontananza i segni di un grande esercito in marcia: polvere e fumo in abbondanza. Ma di chi si trattava, di Shapur, di Procopio, degli Armeni? Scrive Ammiano “Passammo quella notte, non illuminata dallo splendore delle stelle, senza che nessuno osasse sedersi o chiudere occhio per la paura, come suole accadere nelle condizioni difficili. Ma appena parvero le prime luci del giorno, le loriche scintillanti avvolte di fasce di ferro e le corazze lampeggianti annunciarono da lungi la presenza delle truppe del Re”.

Shapur era infine arrivato. Purtroppo non sappiamo molto di cosa accadde nel teatro di guerra settentrionale: nel testo di Ammiano c'è una lacuna e le altre fonti non sono precise a riguardo. A grandi linee sembra che l'esercito di Procopio attraversò effettivamente il Tigri, penetrando in territorio persiano, ma attese invano i rinforzi da parte degli Armeni di Arshak. Per qualche motivo, quest'ultimo tradì i romani, negando i suoi uomini e i vettovagliamenti promessi: pagherà molto caramente questa decisione, forse motivata dal bisogno di non fare trionfare troppo i romani: la presenza di un forte impero persiano era fondamentale per mantenere un equilibrio di poteri che garantisse una certa autonomia per l'Armenia e credo che Arshak non volesse che i romani schiacciassero in modo definitivo i persiani. Shapur marciò effettivamente verso nord incontro a Procopio, cosa che spiegherebbe la sua assenza nei primi mesi di campagna, ma accortosi dell'invasione di Giuliano avrebbe fatto dietrofront. Per motivi inspiegabili Procopio non seguì Shapur e rimase nel nord della Mesopotamia: se avesse seguito Shapur l'esercito combinato romano avrebbe probabilmente avuto facilmente la meglio sugli iraniani.

La situazione era adesso ancora più grave: i rifornimenti non sarebbero bastati ancora a lungo e l'armata persiana era sul campo. Giuliano e il suo entourage decisero quindi che era arrivato il momento di tornare alle loro basi nella Mesopotamia settentrionale per rifornirsi e ricongiungersi con l'esercito settentrionale. La campagna era stata comunque un successo, sarebbe bastato tornare in territorio romano e ricominciare l'anno successivo. Ovviamente se durante la ritirata Shapur avesse dato battaglia i romani l'avrebbero combattuta, fidando nel loro numero, esperienza e valore che ritenevano sufficienti a vincere i persiani in qualunque battaglia campale. E il dramma è che non si sbagliavano.

I romani marciarono per tornare verso il Tigri ma i persiani iniziarono ad attaccare in forze la retroguardia usando la loro micidiale cavalleria. I romani riuscirono a respingere gli attacchi ma ovviamente la marcia ne fu rallentata in quello che era sicuramente l'obiettivo di Shapur, che voleva rendere il più lenta possibile la ritirata. Mentre i romani inciampavano lentamente verso i loro territori tutto intorno a loro i fuochi mandavano in fumo qualunque speranza di rifornirsi con le ricchezze della terra circostante.

La ritirata continuò verso nord, tormentata dal calore degli incendi, dagli insetti e dalla fame. L'esercito giunse infine a Samara, città che esiste ancora oggi nell'Iraq centrale. La situazione era infatti oramai molto grave: scrive Marcellino che la fame iniziò a tormentare sia gli uomini che le bestie da soma, animali indispensabili per il trasporto. Giuliano diede il buono esempio e anche lui mangiò come tutta la truppa, ovvero poco e male. Nella notte Marcellino sostiene che Giuliano vide una stella cadente, un terribile presagio per i superstiziosi romani: si era all'alba di una giornata fatale e Giuliano andava incontro al suo destino.

L'indomani, il 26 Giugno del 363 dopo cristo, i persiani, sconfitti nei giorni precedenti, rinunciarono a dare battaglia campale ma continuarono gli attacchi nella retrovia. Giuliano si comportò con il solito coraggio, coraggio certamente lodevole anche se va ricordato che i romani erano in una situazione così grave, pur avendo vinto ogni battaglia, per colpa della sua avventatezza.

Giuliano, nella fretta di portare soccorso ai suoi, dimenticò di indossare l'armatura e afferrò di fretta uno scudo. Mentre aiutava la retrovia gli giunse notizia che anche i soldati dell'avanguardia erano sotto attacco. Mentre si recava da loro un gruppo di cavalieri persiani attaccò il centro, sostenuto dagli elefanti. Giuliano guidò con coraggio un contrattacco, gettandosi nella mischia. I persiani furono respinti e volti in fuga. Proprio in questi istanti di vittoria avvenne l'imponderabile. Dice Marcellino “Improvvisamente, non si sa da dove provenisse, una lancia della cavalleria gli sfiorò un braccio e gli traversò le costole. Mentre tentava di estrarla con la destra, s'accorse che i nervi delle dita gli erano state recisi dal ferro aguzzo. Svenne e cadde da cavallo e, soccorso immediatamente dai presenti, fu riportato all'accampamento dove fu sottoposto alle cure dei medici”.

Giuliano colpito a morte da una lancia

Ora, io penso che la versione di Marcellino sia la più credibile, alla fin fine era l'unico tra i tanti che scrissero a riguardo di questa giornata fatale che fosse davvero lì, in Mesopotamia. Ma non sarei diligente se non citassi le altre versioni di quello che accadde, almeno quelle principali: la prima è di Libanio, il grande intellettuale pagano di Antiochia che ho già citato altrove. Libanio scrive, in una orazione in onore dell'imperatore pagano, che fu un soldato ausiliario romano a ferire gravemente Giuliano, implicando che stesse seguendo ordini dall'alto. In una versione seguente individua anche quelli che secondo lui sono i colpevoli: i cristiani, anzi una cricca di ufficiali cristiani traditori della patria. Gregorio Nazianzeno è un'altra fonte, ma questa volta cristiana: fu uno dei principali vescovi e intellettuali romani che scrisse due invettive contro Giuliano, fu uno dei primi a chiamarlo con disprezzo apostata. Gregorio riferisce che ci sono più versioni, ma che per lui una volta ferito Giuliano cercò di trasformarsi in divinità, eseguendo un rito magico cercando di gettare il suo corpo in un fiume.
